Summer Plumbing Checklist
Use this checklist to help catch small plumbing problems before they turn into costly repairs during the busy summer months.
Outdoor Plumbing
☐ Check hose bibs/outdoor faucets for leaks, dripping, spraying, or difficulty shutting off.
☐ Inspect hoses and connections for cracks, worn washers, or leaks.
☐ Look for soft, soggy, or unusually green areas in the yard that may indicate an underground leak.
☐ Test sprinkler systems and irrigation lines for broken heads, leaks, or low pressure.
☐ Make sure outdoor drains, driveway drains, and yard drains are clear of leaves, dirt, and debris.
Water Heater
☐ Check for water around the base of the water heater.
☐ Listen for popping, rumbling, or unusual noises.
☐ Make sure hot water is consistent and not running out faster than normal.
☐ Look for rust, corrosion, or moisture near valves and connections.
☐ Consider service if your water heater is 10+ years old or has not been maintained recently.
Drains
☐ Watch for slow drains in sinks, tubs, showers, and laundry areas.
☐ Check for gurgling sounds or sewer smells.
☐ Avoid putting grease, coffee grounds, rice, pasta, eggshells, or fibrous foods down the drain.
☐ Clean hair and debris from shower and tub drain covers.
☐ Schedule drain cleaning if clogs keep coming back.
Toilets & Fixtures
☐ Check toilets for running water, weak flushing, or leaks around the base.
☐ Add a few drops of food coloring to the toilet tank; if color appears in the bowl without flushing, there may be a leak.
☐ Inspect faucets for dripping, loose handles, or low pressure.
☐ Check under sinks for moisture, staining, or soft cabinet bottoms.
☐ Make sure shut-off valves are working and easy to access.
Laundry & Kitchen
☐ Inspect washing machine hoses for bulging, cracking, rust, or leaks.
☐ Check around the dishwasher for leaks or water under nearby cabinets.
☐ Run the garbage disposal with plenty of cold water.
☐ Avoid overloading the disposal with food waste.
☐ Check ice maker and refrigerator water lines for leaks.
Before Vacation
☐ Know where your main water shut-off valve is located.
☐ Consider turning off the main water supply if you will be gone for an extended period.
☐ Check water heater settings before leaving.
☐ Ask someone to check the home if you will be away for more than a few days.
☐ Address any active leaks before leaving town.
